Our Local Box is a new subscription box that is near and dear to my heart. One thing that makes it extra special to me, is it filled with items that are made in Kentucky. Both sides of my family are from Kentucky, so I love that fact. I also love that they use local items, that is really special. They also pack their boxes with full-sized items. That’s right, you won’t get 10 sample sized items. Nope, you will get a full-sized amount of some really great products!
“No gift baskets! No cellophane! No stereotypes!
Nothing against the traditional Kentucky gift and souvenir shops, but OLB aims to diminish stereotypes by highlighting only the coolest, most unique food, music, art, home, beauty and other products our backyard has to offer. Our Local Box exists because we truly believe that Kentucky is home to some of the most progressive products in the world. We showcase this local talent through monthly subscription boxes, pre-made gift boxes, custom corporate gift boxes and an ecommerce retail shop.”
I received a box and couldn’t wait to review it! The first thing I noticed was how gorgeous the packaging was. Our Local Box is an experience. It starts when you first open the gorgeous box.
Our Local Box has a sort of vintage feel to it. I love that they tell you what everything is. Once you open the box they explain to you what the theme is, and why they chose it. Then you get the name of the item, the company or person that makes it, where in Kentucky it came from and the price, along with a small blurb about the product and/or company.
I love how this is all explained to you. First impressions really do mean a lot, and Our Local Box knows how to make you feel like you have just been welcomed into their Grandmother’s house for dinner.
I know that when I test new types of foods out I get a little panicky. I was SO pleasantly surprised to see Our Local Box adds foods that people know about, and will actually use. This is what was in the June’s box.
Bourbon Smoked Pepper– Louisville, KY-$12.00
This is 2 ounces of deliciousness made by Bourbon Barrel Foods. I will admit, I’m not a huge pepper fan. However, when I took a whiff of this Bourbon Smoked Pepper I couldn’t wait to try it. When you open the tin you get a smokey scent. The bourbon definitely makes the pepper more of a complex taste.
This is the product description from the box.
“These cracked peppercorns are treated like royalty and slowly smoked with aged bourbon barrels. Yes, these re-purposed barrels are actually once held some of Kentucky’s most delicious bourbon. The result is a wispy hint of smoke and subtle oaky flavor that will enliven any dish that calls for salt and pepper.”
Organic Heirloom Hickory King Corn Grits– Mt. Olivet, KY-$5.00
I must confess, I haven’t eaten grits before. In my defense they never looked appetizing. When I opened Our Local Box I noticed how delicious these grits looked. They are freshly ground from open-pollinated heirloom white organic Hickory King Corn! They are made by Sunflower Sundries. I am excited to test these out and I will let you know how they are!
This is the excerpt from the box.
“Grown on the Sunflower Sundries farm in Mt. Olivet, Kentucky, these course ground grits are made from a non-GMO, 100% chemical-free, open-pollinated heirloom variety of white hickory kind corn and that’s all. Yup… just one ingredient. Try finding that at the grocery store! Sunflower Sundries has been a small, family-run business for over 21 years and is committed to contributing to the organic and “think global, buy local” movements. They also offer a variety of hams, marmalades, mustards and handmade soaps.”
Bluegrass Soy Sauce, Louisville, KY- $6.00
WOW! This soy sauce is insane. I don’t know how they made it so delicious. Quite frankly the only thing I am concerned about is why I haven’t had this sooner. This soy sauce is aged in re-purposed bourbon barrels, that means you get the hint of oaky flavor as well.
This is their description of the product.
“Maybe it’s the fermented soybeans talking, but this is by far the best, soy sauce we’ve ever tasted. This smoky concoction is micro-brewed in small batches using non-GMO, Kentucky-grown soybeans, soft red winter wheat and the purest limestone filtered spring water. The soybean mash is aged in re-purposed bourbon barrels to infuse hunts of oak and a mild sweetness reminiscent of fine Kentucky bourbon.”
I haven’t gotten to test this out yet, but I did call my Grandmother, because she would know the best way to use it. She is from Monticello, Kentucky. When I asked her what she would use this Pure Cane Sorghum on she said, “Molasses cookies! But, don’t you waste it. You will just ruin it, bring them here and I will make them for you.” I think she just wanted to taste it herself. I will be taking pictures for you guys to show you the magic my Grandma makes in the kitchen. I’ve noticed that everyone from Kentucky is very proud of where they are from, and what Kentucky has to offer. That makes me happy seeing such unity within a state. Ohio is so very different. I get the sense when I talk to my family that no matter how long they have lived in Kentucky, or away from Kentucky it still feels like home.
Another thing that Our Local Box does that really puts this box above and beyond any other subscription box I have had before is that they don’t just had you a random box and let you figure out what to do with it. Nope, these amazing people (I imagine them as little magical elves, because this box is literally perfect), put together a recipe to use all of your amazing Kentucky-made products!
It also ties in with the theme of the June box which is Chef Edward Lee, and the release of his new cookbook “Smoke & Pickles”.
I would say overall this box is a 10 out of 10. 10 for the presentation. 10 for the quality and uniqueness of product. 10 for the customer service. 10 for giving you a recipe, and products that you will actually use. If you are looking for a subscription box to test out and you are looking for one that you won’t be disappointed in, check out Our Local Box. Promise you will love it.
